Fit for climate change - Breeding strategies for location-adapted dairy farming in Baden-Württemberg
Dairy farming is an important economic factor in Baden-Württemberg and helps to
shape the diverse landscape. Innovative peasant breeding programs support the
further development of the most important breeds: Fleckvieh, Brown Swiss and
Holstein. Breeding for robustness and resilience promotes the adaptability and
stability of cattle to the consequences of climate change. Breeding for life efficiency
optimizes the ratio of input to output in the entire production chain from calf to cow or
beef cattle and contributes to climate protection. An improved fattening performance
of the calves from dairy farming and a higher life effectiveness of the dairy cows
increase the efficiency of the process, which is more climate-friendly. The increasing
digitization in the farms enables the construction of an infrastructure for the collection,
storage and Processing of daily and therefore continuously accumulating data from
the farms. Interactions between the animals and their environment are precisely
recorded and the optimal genotypes under Baden-Württemberg conditions are
determined.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
The breeders are convinced of the benefits of the new traits tested and established in the project. The
data acquisition for the characteristic complexes robustness, resilience and life efficiency in the farms
and by the farmers is secured. A training routine has been developed and group-discussions have
been established as a regional exchange and advice platform. The Rinderdatenverbund (RDV) as a
central database for cattle breeding and keeping in Baden-Württemberg has been expanded;
interfaces to farms and the breeding value estimation centers have been set up. Continuously
accumulating data can be saved and processed.
Target traits for breeding for robustness and resilience have been identified, and the basis for a
breeding value estimation for these traits has been laid. Concepts for a breeding value Index “calf, for
