Cultivation and processing of camelina
To date, camelina has only been cultivated on a small scale. Yet the plant is highly interesting for agriculture and nature conservation in mixed crops, for example with all legumes: it expands crop rotation, helps build up humus and suppresses other weeds. Camelina flowers in June, when few flowering crops are available for bees and other insects. It is currently used as an oil plant: for the food and paint industries. The press cake contains a high proportion of protein but also substances that reduce digestibility for pigs or humans, for example. Camelina is suitable for human consumption if the indigestible substances such as phytic acids are removed. In order to establish camelina as a crop in mixed cultivation, the harvesting technology must be able to separate the harvested crop. The camelina project is investigating market potential, profitability and technical processes in camelina cultivation and protein processing.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
