Antago-Senecio - Integrated control of Senecio by antagonists and production technology
Ragwort (Senecio spec.) populations are increasing considerably, especially on extensively farmed land. They contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are highly toxic to grazing animals. This is increasingly jeopardising the use of grassland as fodder. Effective control of ragworts secures forage production. The aim of the project is to effectively regulate ragworts, which contain feeding toxins, while at the same time preserving species diversity. To this end, experimental crops of Senecio species are being planted under greenhouse conditions (on-station research) and practical trials are being carried out on eight farms in the Westerwald model region (on-farm research). In addition, Senecio cultures will be planted as a food source for breeding and propagating herbivorous insects in order to understand the biology of the insects and interactions between the food plant and insect under controlled conditions. The knowledge gained then leads to the selection of biological and agricultural measures.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
