Project Title

utilisation of residues from hemp processing - supply of peat substitute and alternatives

Project description

In hemp fiber production, based on the raw material, approx. 25% production residues (shives, fiber-shives mixture and fine fibers) arise, which require economic use. Against this background, the objective of the cooperation was to develop a sustainable way of using the residues. The focus was on recycling as a peat substitute substrate (for commercial and hobby horticulture). In addition, the raw materials were also tested for possible use as packaging.

How can residues from hemp fiber production be used as a peat substitute? The Operational group examined this with regard to the technical feasibility, the product properties, the economic efficiency and the ecological benefit. By hydrothermal carbonisaton (HTC) the material properties of the residues were adapted to the requirements of peat substitutes. It was also checked whether the HTC process water could be used in a biogas plant (aerobic fermentation).

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The fractions examined included a mixture of fibers and shives, the pure shives and the untreated hemp straw. The use of the residual materials for the production of packaging and bioplastics had to be ruled out at an early stage due to their physical properties (especially the high shives content). With regard to the material parameters, the HTC treated residues from hemp fiber production are basically suitable for peat substitute production. However, further treatments are necessary before it can be used, e.g. to avoid fungal growth and sharp-edged shives in the substrate. A utilization of the process water in biogas plants seems feasible with a longer retention time. However, due to the lack of economic viability, it was advised against continuing the investigations in a large-scale implementation (pilot plant) in a second project phase.
