Development of value chains for regional dual-purpose chicken breeds in Baden-Wuerttemberg
To avoid the killing of male chicks from breeds of laying hens, the associations for organic farming will increase the usage of dual-purpose chicken breeds in the future. Currently, only few innovative farmers keep dual-purpose chickens in Baden-Wuerttemberg. The project ‚ZweiWert‘ aims at creating a regional network of players to build a regional value chain for dual-purpose chickens in Baden-Wuerttemberg. Therefore, a status quo analysis and a potential assessment regarding the agricultural production, processing as well as marketing and distribution is carried out. ‚ZweiWert‘ includes the hole value chain in different ways: With the participation of the agricultural practice, animal breeding and husbandry is involved to establish a rural poultry breeding of dual-purpose chicken in Baden-Wuerttemberg. Dialogue forums will help to assess the needs of trade and processing. Factors that promote and inhibite the usage of dual-purpose chicken will be defined. In consumer studies in two Biomusterregionen innovative products will be tested and the expectations and insights of the consumers will be collected.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
The use of dual-purpose chicken is perfect for organic famring. Chickens lay eggs, and roosters are producing meat. The project establishes a network of players of breeding, poultry husbandry, slaughter, trading and processing and records the demands along the whole value chain.
‚ZweiWert‘ builds such value chains from breeders of regional chickens to the consumers exemplarly, and they will be further developed under the lead of Naturland after the project. Due to stable schools, a network of farmers is developed, which are involved in a peer to peer advisory. Information is given to consumers, processing and trading companies for future marketing strategies and customer communication.
