Near infrares spectroscopy (NIRS) as an innovative mean for the assessment of grape quality in times of climate change
The impact of climate change leads to more extreme weather conditions in the wine-growing areas of Baden and Württemberg. As a result, more grape rot, invasive pests (such as the spotted wing drosophila), and an altered ripeness ocur.
during the scope of this study the health status and ripeness stage of grapes will be assessed by near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). This technique allows measurements in-line during grape delivery without time delay or digestion of the grapes for analysis.
For calibration means, samples will bes taken and chemically analysed on several parameters. To ensure a sufficient and solid database for the calibration of the instrument, NIRS will be applied over three consecutive years at two sites in Baden and Württemberg, respectively, using the most importatnt varieties in each region. The system will be basis for an optimised quality management in viticulture in Baden and Württemberg and will motivate the grpe-growers to produce grapes of high quality.
