Cultivation of hemp as a catch crop to reduce nitrate inputs and greenhouse gas emissions
Winter hemp - nutrient collector and new fodder plant: catch crops cover the soil in winter, contribute to humus formation and bind nutrients. When they rot on the fields after freezing, they also release CO2. Legumes, which are often used as catch crops, accumulate nitrogen in the soil, which is not desirable in areas already polluted with nitrate. The ZwiHanf project is investigating the applicability and possible uses of hemp for nitrate reduction in soils. Hemp grows quickly, suppresses other vegetation and does not flower when sown in late summer. In addition to the functions of a catch crop, winter hemp also offers potential uses, making it a source of income. The stalks are suitable for fiber production after the winter. Whether and how the leaves can be used as fodder for cows will be shown in the course of the project. A catch crop that can be used to produce fodder can reduce competition for land for fodder and food cultivation.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
