Lupi-Hirse-Huhn - Alternative crops for adaptation to climate change & improvem. of regional added value through new feeding strategies in poultry far
Through climate change, the questions of which crops can become an alternative to crop rotations in warm and dry arable regions arise.
The aim of the project is to establish sorghum grain millet and white lupine, two new crops in arable farming in Rhineland-Palatinate. Furthermore, the harvested products should be used in poultry feeding to strengthen regional production and receive more regional added value for the farmers. Sorghum might be a useful crop to adapt cropping systems to climate change. This also applies to the white lupine, which is more drought tolerant than soybean. White lupine can also be grown in cooler locations, which was not possible with soybeans. Freedom from genetic engineering and the farm's own feed are important marketing arguments of regional sold products.
In different locations white lupins and sorghum are grown in field trials. The suitability, yields and qualities will be investigated and results will be discussed. The digestibility of sorghum and lupine is confirmed by feeding studies and broiler populations. On top of that, feeding rations are being developed that will be in practice farms compared to standard feed mixtures.
