Project Title

Process development detecting Drains

Project description

The BMELV-report regarding the redefinition of less favoured areas (in the European Union) criticizes that there is no resilient data basis concerning the 4 million hectares of drained farmland in Germany. The durability of subsurface drainage pipes that are well maintained amounts to 50 years. The bulk oft the drainage systems was already built in the 1970s, hence the urability of the particular pipes has been clearly exceeded in many cases. Objective of the project was the development of an innovative, time- and cost-effective method of detecting agricultural drainage systems based on existing methods (e.g. aerial photo evaluation, ground radar data and soil moisture measurements). The obtained information is to be implemented in the data management of the participating farms so that the farmers can find, maintain and manage drainages independently. This is to prevent the failure of drainages and the associated loss of yield, respectively to ensure the profitability of the areas concerned.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

Numerous tools and methods for detecting drainage systems were successfully tested, optimized and trialled. In addition to results in the areas of aerial image evaluation, soil moisture index, etc., further tools were developed to counteract the progressive loss of knowledge in the field of melioration. Following a detailed analysis of the data and structures, each farm was provided with a web-based cadastre of melioration data containing all the drainage information obtained in the project. A web-based tool for calculating yield losses was developed in collaboration with Stephan Wehner - IT specialist in training at the Dresden Vocational Training Center and will be made available free of charge on the Apus Systems website "www.apussystems.com" in the login area. After a one-time registration, the tool will be available free of charge along with other materials for the fields of melioration and geoinformatics. In addition, extensive training materials have been created for the fiel
