Project Title

A sustainable process chain for sugar beets as an energy or raw materials supplier

Project description

The bio-economy in the non-food sector comprises both energetic and material use of regionally available agricultural raw materials, waste products and by-products that can be further developed in combination with cascade and bio-refining concepts. Changes to cultivation systems and optimisations to processes and process chains also play a significant part in improving eco-effectiveness within the scope of the “cradle to cradle” principle. The project is divided into different work packages, each of which is led individually or cooperatively by members of the operational team: More sustainable cultivation – Sugar beet fertilisation using the AKRA system; Sugar beet processing – Trial new processing methods; Optimisation of the process chain for sugar beets as a biogas substrate Provision of information; communication and public relations.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The project provided important information about the sustainable implementation of beet as biogas substrate on working farms.

Fertilisation trials were conducted on practice areas with manure and fermentation substrates in combination with the AKRA fertiliser system. The fertiliser variations showed a healthy plant development and a slightly higher yield. The availability of nutrients improved. So in spite of an reduced nitrogen and phosphorus fertilisation, drought tolerant and stable plant populations brought high yields.

The prototype „Beetmaster WM“ from the Putsch GmbH and its mobile cleaning procedure was tested at different sites. In doing so the entire process chain from cultivating to using sugar beets was optimised economically and ecologically. A reduction of process costs by 10 euros per ton makes the sugar beet an efficient alternative to corn.
