Selection of specialized breeding lines of Black Soldier Flies for the production of animal feed from regional residuals
Concept development
Black soldier fly larvae can convert a variety of agricultural byproducts into high-guality protein feed. However, not all of these residues support the growth of the larvae at an economically viable rate. In practice for many substrates the feed efficiency or growth time is so low that economic use of these substrates is not possible. Aim oft he project ist to develop a concept which clarifles which residues are well suited for insect fattening and how breeding lines adapted to these residues can be produced. By developing specialized breeding lines with higher growth and feed conversion rates for certain byproducts, more residues can be used as larval feed. This will make regional protein production with insect larvae even more sustainable and economical and signiflcantly increase protein self-sufficiency in the EU.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
