Testing of a method for the alternative keeping of sows in the farrowing area compared to conventional standard methods
Over the last few decades, housing systems have been established in various husbandry sections that will only be accepted in the future with considerable changes. In the farrowing section, sows with piglets are usually kept in piglet crates. This section of the housing system is designed to keep maternal piglet mortality (piglet losses due to crushing, number of stillborn piglets) as low as possible. The project aims at optimising the method of alternative management of sows in farrowing areas in movement pens, in particular to significantly reduce piglet losses after opening the movement pens. The aim is to optimise the installed Combiflex movement pens by implementing new, previously non-existent technical equipment elements. The main focus is to positively influence the lying down behaviour of sows, to be able to modify the piglets' walkways and to adapt the piglet nests. In addition, new management measures which have not yet been established are to be explored to reduce suckling pig losses after opening fPiglet protection cage.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
The aim of the investigations is to be able toshow what effects the established measures have on the piglet loss occurrence after opening of the piglet protection cages. This will provide reliable results for the implementation and transfer of these husbandry methods to broad-based agricultural sow husbandry. At the same time, recommendations for the equipment of exercise pens can be developed, based on a field trial under practical operating conditions.
