Project Title

On farm test based selective dry cow therapy - reducing the use of antibiotic dry cow treatment in dairy cattle farming

Project description

The aim of the project is to develop and implement an innovative concept for antibiotic-minimised, selective drying-off of dairy cows. The development of such a concept serves to specifically reduce the use of antibiotics when drying off dairy cows in order to minimise the risk of the emergence of antibiotic resistance without endangering udder health. Such a concept includes the integration of different herd- and cow-associated factors as well as the consideration of the microorganisms involved. The implementation of such a concept also requires the development and integration of a rapid test that enables a therapy decision to be made at the individual animal or quarter level. The focus of the project is on the further development of competitive, resource-conserving and animal species-appropriate production systems in conventional and organic animal husbandry, which thus makes an important contribution to the conservation of resources and the improvement of animal health and welfare.
