Project Title

Development and establishment of regional value added chain hemp growth and processing of fibres and hurds into innovative products

Project description

The focus of this cooperation project was the processing of hemp straw into sustainable products for animal husbandry and horticulture. The OG worked together on the development of cultivation and quality criteria. On the one hand, recommendations for action for hemp cultivation under Thuringian site conditions are to be derived from the project results. Equally important was the development and optimization of harvesting and processing technology, depending on the end product. The project pursued the following goals: Expansion of hemp cultivation in Thuringia and increase in value creation potential through innovative use of fibers. As possible uses of the hemp fibers and shives in the field of animal welfare, among other things, employment materials for pig keeping, lying mats for cattle and floor protection mats for the exercise of laying hens were developed and tested. For the field of gardening and landscaping, nonwovens made from different compositions of hemp raw materials were tested. For the packaging sector, the aim was to develop materials from the renewable raw material hemp, with regional origins.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The project concentrated on the hemp fiber fractions without previous utilization: fine shives & fiber-shives mixture. Since no long fibers are currently being extracted in the fiber pulping plant in Thuringia, textile production was not pursued any further for technical reasons. The TITK therefore dealt with the production of nonwovens: The suitability of the material was checked and the first test nonwovens were made. The combination of hemp fibers with sheep's wool proved to be advantageous in order to obtain more strength in the nonwovens (despite the short hemp fibers). Above all, the possible uses in garden landscaping proved to be very promising and will be pursued further. The animal welfare working group primarily focused on the use of nonwovens as occupational material for pig farming. The use of nonwovens with a high percentage of sheep's wool as insert for wake-up boxes for castrated piglets also showed good results.
