Securing potato production in Hesse through innovative cicada management.
Sustainable potato cultivation in Hesse is threatened by the new potato disease "bacterial potato tuber wilt" and its vector insects, in particular the reed glasswing cicada. The aim of the project is to generate knowledge about the development and spread of the disease and its symptoms in and with the field in order to identify possible ways of mitigating an infestation and its effects. The aim is to make potato cultivation in Hesse future-proof in the long term and maintain its profitability. As the disease was only discovered in 2022, monitoring and analysis of both the cicadas and the pathogens they transmit are a focus of the project. Field trials will be carried out at several locations with the aim of generating results on the attractiveness of different varieties for the cicadas and information on their tolerance in practice. Potato varieties that are already available and relevant for cultivation in Hesse will be tested for their tolerance. Finally, the project aims to provide recommendations for action (e.g. variety recommendations) that can be easily implemented nationwide.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
