Project Title

Rhizo-bacteria-supported optimization of lentil cultivation with consideration of bioeconomic added value

Project description

The lens is one of the oldest cultivated plants and an important source of protein for humans. Until the 40s of the last century it was cultivated in Baden-Württemberg on large areas (up to 4500 ha). After that, cultivation declined completely throughout Germany. For almost 10 years, the lentil has been cultivated again in Baden-Württemberg, although the area under cultivation is still clearly can be enlarged. In this project, the cultivation of the lens is to be improved through the use of bacteria inoculant, thus increasing the economic efficiency of lens cultivation. The planned project is divided into 3 phases:

  1. Isolation & testing of the rhizobia and bacteria species in vascular experiments, selection of the bacterial mixtures with a clear positive effect on the growth of the lens.
  2. Testing of the mixtures selected in phase 1 in exact experiments in the field at different locations; events for interested practitioners at the experimental sites
  3. formulation of the inoculant, which consists of the bacterial strains that have shown the best effect on the plant growth of the lens.
