Project Title

Buildup of hazelnut plants with an innovative cultivation system, screening of sorts/ screening of sort substratum combinations/in-vitro proliferation

Project description

Project objectives:

  • Composition of hazelnut plantations with an innovative cultivation system for future testing of the cultivation system and suitable hazelnut varieties for Thuringia and evaluation (with focus on tree nursery aspects) regarding seedling cultivation of graftings.
  • Testing of the innovative cultivation systems and respective sorts/ sorts-substratum-combinations depending on planting time and first initial yields.
  • Acquisition of business data for later assessment of yield possibilities and profitability.
  • Investigation of Thuringian hazelnuts on value-adding ingredients.

With these objectives, the basis for the long-term goal of a possible establishment of a niche production of hazelnuts in Thuringia should be laid for regional supply.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

  • The four practice partners planted a total of over 2,600 hazelnut trees with different varieties and combinations of varieties and rootstocks. Irrigation turned out to be necessary. The installation of an irrigation system should be planned carefully and individually for each farm.
  • The time invested in maintaining the systems is often underestimated by newcomers with no experience in orcharding. The ability to cope with work peaks should be checked before new systems.
  • In the cultivation year 2020 feeding holes of the larvae of the nut weevil were found. The follow-up project will focus in particular on investigations into innovative ways to combat the nut weevil.
  • The time of grafting turned out to be relevant to the success of the planting material. The in-vitro propagation was not pursued any further due to significant losses caused by bacterial contaminations.
  • Due to fluctuations, the nutritional value has to be examined ove
