Project Title

ENEGÜLL - innovative digestate processing technology

Project description

The aim of the project is to develop a procedure for liquid slurry processing for agricultural enterprises, with which slurry and manure can be used to produce transport-worthy, nutritionally optimized fertilizers. For this purpose, farm manure is not treated after addition to the biogas plant as is has been done so far, but before addition (alternatively during use) so that as much nitrogen, phosphate and water as possible are removed.

By producing concentrated fertilizers the transport costs are reduced. In addition, gas production is to be increased by optimizing the substrate properties, and the cultivation of energy maize by using regional farm manure in the biogas process will be reduced. Farmers whose enterprises differ in substrate composition as well as agricultural areas of focus are working in the project to test and implement the innovation. As a result, improvements in the environment, agriculture and sustainability of biogas plants are expected.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The idea of processing slurry and manure before feeding it into the biogas plant is proving to be forward-looking and feasible. On the one hand, it has already been possible to replace part of the maize quantity with slurry and manure and, on the other, to obtain defined fertiliser products. Originally, the focus was on an ammonium sulphate solution (ASL). Thanks to the impulse of a farmer, sulphuric acid ammonia (SSA) could even be produced from the ASL. This increases storability and in turn reduces storage capacity. All farms were able to save on storage. With the help of laboratory tests, possible effects of the substrate change on the microbiology were determined, in some cases with fatal consequences for the biogas yield. Based on the laboratory findings, recommendations for practical application were made and implemented by the project partners. This led to a successful change in feeding without a serious drop in biogas production.
