Physiological system to measure and manage animal welfare using the example of dairy cattle
For assessing animal welfare behavior and health of animals are evaluated. This could be made by measuring direct, animal-related indicators or with elaborately and expensively indirect indicators. The project aims to implement and validate a system for automated measurement, analysis and evaluation of animal welfare of dairy cattle on farms in Brandenburg. Basis for the system shall be the individual and sensor technical acquisition of physiological measurement parameters of the animal by using an ear tag system called smardwatch®. The collected data are assessed subsequently by a chronobiological regulation diagnosis and have to be presented in form of an animal welfare traffic lights system. The animal welfare traffic light is an objective, animal-individual and real-time capable assessment system and shall be linked to existing herd management systems. As a result, information regarding optimization of animal welfare for each individual farm and recommendations on fertility and animal health have to be elaborated. Furthermore, the animal welfare traffic light system shall be integrated into the value chain of Brandenburg.
The electronic ear tag smardtag® was used in several developement stages and in a combination of different technical solutions for data reading. It non-invasively measures the physiological parameters on the skin surface of the cow's ear, with the help of which the stress and disease states of the animal are measured and combined in the “fitness” traffic light complex. Tierwohl-Ampel, programmed as a module within the HERDEplus® management software, records in addition to the 5 fitness characteristics of the ear tag measurement with the current processing status a further 14 individual characteristics within the traffic light complex. In addition, three so-called management aids "Disease detection", "Heat detection" and "Calf prediction" have been developed that provide information beyond animal welfare measurements. EIP-project Tierwohl-Ampel has reached the various links in the value chain from the cowshed to the consumer.
