Adapting technology in professional fruit growing in the „Alte Land“ region
Against the background of the special area ordinance issued on 11 March 2015, the innovation project aims to make a significant contribution to the further development of the competitiveness and sustainability of the fruit-growing industry in Lower Saxony. The project supports the further development of resource-conserving plant protection management for both conventional and organic fruit growers. The project aims to investigate and improve suitable plant protection techniques and to research alternative risk minimisation measures (tunnel-type sprayers with drift reduction) in order to increase the effectiveness and ecological compatibility of fruit cultivation.
In the three-year trials, the biological effectiveness of tunnel-type sprayers was compared with axial fan sprayers under conventional and organic production conditions. Tunnel-type devices were superior in controlling apple scab, but were less effective in controlling aphids. No technique was generally superior, differences were pest-dependent. The use of tunnel-type devices complies with the requirements of the Altes Land Pflanzenschutzverordnung (ALVO) for minimising the risk of plant protection products entering bodies of water.
