PotatoScan - Georeferenced size detection of root crops on agricultural machinery
The growing world population is forcing primary producers to increase their yields while maintaining the same land use, and at the same time the extreme weather conditions caused by climate change are making agricultural use more difficult. There are two problems in the potato industry: 1. Information on the size distribution of stored potato stocks is unclear. So far, it is hardly possible to sort potatoes by machine and then store them. 2. Precision farming using satellite imagery does not work for root crops that are underground. For potatoes, there is no evidence between the correlation of plant and tuber. The innovative idea is to install georeferenced sizing on a potato harvester. This solves both problems at the same time. For this, a real-time surveying system must be installed on a harvester that links the size information with the location using GNSS. However, the challenges with this method lie in the demanding optical measurement of the potatoes on the conveyor belt.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
