Project Title

A sustainable process chain for sugar beets as an energy or raw materials supplier

Project description

In Lower Saxony, there is a need for more efficient utilisation of agricultural raw materials in the bioeconomy of the non-food sector. The project focuses on the optimisation of biogas production from sugar beet. The aim is to increase efficiency and utilise resources better by implementing new cultivation methods and innovative process technologies. A central component is a self-propelled machine prototype that integrates the processing and loading of the beet. At the same time, storage and utilisation processes for residual materials are being improved in order to achieve a more sustainable and economical overall structure.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The project provides findings on the sustainable use of sugar beet as a biogas substrate in practice. Fertilisation trials with liquid manure and fermentation substrates under the AKRA fertilisation system (use of nitrogen fixing bacteria and soil additives)achieved positive results with higher yields despite reduced nutrient supply. The machine tests of the "Beetmaster WM" prototype from Putsch GmbH optimised the biogas beet process chain both economically and ecologically. A cost reduction of 10 euros per tonne makes sugar beet an economical alternative to maize.
