Project Title

innovative plant protection strategies to reduce the use of resources for sustainable fruit production in the face of climate change

Project description

Climate change and the transition of apple cultivation in Baden-Württemberg to modern production Systems, affect the spread of relevant pathogens and pests. This must be studied at an early stage, to adapt accordingly to the new conditions. By 2030, usage of crop protection products must be reduced by 40-50 %. Innovative strategies of Controlling diseases and pests will be necessary, to be able to continue producing high quality and market-conform fruit in the region.
New and alternative approaches using resistance properties of varieties or adapted crop management must be investigated. Priority is given to biological concepts (BCA), optical sensors in combination with methods to analyze data, as well as molecular biological approaches in an overarching integrated production System. Innovative plant protection strategies will be scientifically tested in a model plant at the KOB (monitoring beneficials-pests-interaction), subsequently implemented at commercial farms and evaluated for practicability, profitability and marketing
potential. Finally, the innovative strategies will be introduced to fruit growing

Final report

Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

Sensor based monitoring and application of biological control agents will reduce the usage of plant
protection products (PPP). Data gathered during the project on the occurrence and spread of
pathogens/pests will enable farmers, that employ modern production Systems, to adapt to the relevant pathogens/pests and target them specifically.
The protection of insect diversity and bees will be improved through this more targeted control of the
identified insect pests. Noticeably lower expenses are expected for the use of PPPs in integrated and
organic apple production.
This will result in significant and sustainable advancements in environmental protection, bio diversity
and yield and will subsequently improve social acceptance of agriculture in Baden-Württemberg and
promote competitiveness of regional products.
