Project Title

Development of a method for the early diagnosis of metabolic disorders in dairy cows (OG: MeMoGen)

Project description

Objective of the project was to identify metabolic parameters of dairy cows that can be used for regular monitoring of metabolic health by analysis of urine and milk samples, especially during the crucial transition phase, to achieve an early detection of disorders related to inadequate feeding and high performance. In addition, the data setting of infrared spectra of milk samples can be used for the development of new possibilities in animal health monitoring.

Data was collected from 406 milking German Holstein dairy cows at three different points in time. The samples were analysed for 14 blood parameter, 5 urine parameters as well as the infrared spectra and the insulin concentration. The focus was on the early detection of the fat mobilization and other metabolic disorders.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

As a result of the project an animal-oriented data material is available, which allows an evaluation of the metabolic parameters with regard to early disease detection much better than the usual lead-oriented approach in the consultation routine. The main result of the project is the establishment of parameters for the early detection of disease and departure risks in dairy cows in the transit phase. Thus, the determination of beta-hydroxybutyrate by means of infrared spectrometry and Fourier transformation could be introduced. In addition to the laboratory diagnostic assessment of NEFA, bilirubin and cholesterol, the assessment of rumen filling and body condition prior to calving will also be integrated in the routine metabolic monitoring. This is an important contribution to the reduction of metabolic disorders, but also associated inflammatory diseases such as mastitis, metritis, laminitis and abomasal displacement.
