Concept for optimizing population management in the Rhenish German Coldblood (PSSM1)
Polysaccharide storage myopathy type 1 (PSSM1) is a genetic disease that can lead to impaired skeletal muscle metabolism in affected horses. The aim is to investigate the carrier frequency of the gene mutation causal for PSSM1 in the Rhenish-German Coldblood in Saxony, which is classified as endangered, and to analyze the effects on performance parameters and health of the horses. In order to make a well-founded recommendation on the breeding use of carrier animals and to enable breeders to make optimized mating decisions, the active breeding population will be comprehensively genotyped.
Genotyping of the sample revealed a proportion of 47% wild-type (N/N), 47% heterozygous carriers (N/PSSM1), and 6% homozygous carriers (PSSM1/PSSM1). Of 178 study animals, eight horses showed symptoms of PSSM1. Neither sex, age, nor geographic origin showed significant group differences. The suspicion that the mutated GYS1 gene in the Rhenish-German Coldblood leads to more frequent symptoms of disease and performance problems could not be substantiated in this study. It follows that a genotypically positive horse, even if homozygous positive, should not be directly excluded from breeding. If the spread of the gene mutation in the breeding population is to be prevented, it is recommended to mate double carriers with wild types instead of homozyhous genetic carriers of PSSM1.
However, if symptoms occur in the PSSM1-positive Rhenish-German Coldblood, feeding and husbandry must be adapted.
