Project Title

Scientifically based growing trials with various truffle species to build regional value chains...(OG: Truffle in Thuringia)

Project description

Thuringia is truffle land. The mixed deciduous forests on the loess- and limestone soils between Ilm, Unstrut and Saale are the natural habitat of the Burgundy truffle, Tuber aestivum, which is appreciated by gourmets. The "Bundesartenschutzverordnung" in Germany prohibits the taking of truffles in the wild. The Cultivation is permitted and has been again gaining in importance in Germany. Perigord truffle, Tuber melanosporum, is expensive. It is successfully grown in southern Europe, not yet in Germany. The climatic conditions in Thuringia offer good conditions for cultivation experiments. Our cooperation from Thuringian farmers and international research institutes would like to establish truffle cultivation in Thuringia and optimize the yield of new plantations through comparative basic research and field trials. The focus is on the local burgundy truffle.

Final report

Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

Most of the truffle plantations in Italy and France do not have the productivity of natural sites. That is why we use the expected findings and results of special location analyzes from the exploration of natural sites consistently for the acquisition of culture, care and maintenance. The management recommendations developed from this with regard to financial, time-related and profit-oriented planning make it possible to establish truffle cultivation in Thuringia and make it lucrative. More precise knowledge of the development cycle opens up additional control options for production. Research results on fungus-associated microorganisms promise further optimization possibilities. By adapting the legal basis, mushroom farming is to become an independent economic sector.
