Keel bone damage in layers (OG: MeTiWoLT II)
The cooperating layer farms, the poultry health service and TLLLR will work on the subject "keel bone damage in layers" in close cooperation with scientific institutions (service provider). During the course of the laying period (18. - 65. weeks of age) damage of the keel bone in hens will be assessed under practical conditions and diagnosed using X-ray. Risk factors will be deduced from concomitant examination and data collection.
Based on the results, relevant and practical recommendations to prevent keel bone damage will be developed jointly from all stakeholders and implemented on farm with technical advice. Two consecutive flocks per farm will be integrated in this project.
Keel bone damage causes pain and changes in the behaviour of affected flocks. Effective prevention will thus contribute significantly to improved animal welfare.
Meetings and trainings are planned to share and spread knowledge among thuringian layer farmers. Project results will be published through agricultural and veterinary technical press.

Fractures and deformation of keel bones are a serious problem concerning animal welfare in layers.
Increased knowledge on incidence and etiology of keel bone damage will be gained within this project through technical and scientific monitoring of layer flocks throughout the laying period.
Based on risk factors to be identified in the course of the project, stakeholders will collaborate developing practical recommendations to prevent keel bone damage.Technical monitoring of a consecutive layer flock on participating farms will help to assess the effect of implemented preventive measures.
