Project Title

Vaccination as a tool to reduce the incidence of paratuberculosis in dairy goat flocks (OG: ParaVac)

Project description

Intensive dairy goat farms are often severely affected by paratuberculosis, a chronic intestinal infection. The OG joined forces to investigate whether vaccination in combination with hygiene and management measures can reduce the prevalence of paratuberculosis and whether this leads to a reduction in pathogen excretion into the milk/colostrum. On this basis, recommendations for the control of paratuberculosis on dairy goat farms should be developed.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The prevalence of pathogen-excreting goats fell from 30.0 % to 3.5 %. Both the vaccination and the removal of known shedders contributed to this. The paratuberculosis pathogen was not detectable in the colostrum of vaccinated mother goats. The detection of reproducible pathogens in lambing pens makes it clear that infection of the offspring is easily possible in these areas. Recommendations for the control of paratuberculosis will be provided by the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute and directly incorporated into the advisory activities of the Thuringian Sheep and Goat Health Service.
