Project Title

PlaWaKiRi - The use of plasma water against claw infections in cattle

Project description

In the scope of the project, an alternative, antibiotic-free therapy against the pathogen of the claw disease Mortellaro (dermatitis digitalis) is to be developed and tested under practical conditions by using the technology of cold atmospheric pressure plasmas. Through the collaboration of partners from the public and private sectors - research institutions and end users - the project thus serves the EIP's call for agricultural innovation as part of a research cooperation. The aim of the project is to reduce or completely avoid the use of antibiotics and biocides in the therapy of Mortellaro disease in dairy cows under the premise of improving animal welfare by means of a plasma-based therapeutic process. With the successful implementation of the project, the use of antibiotics can be reduced or avoided both in conventionally and organically managed dairy cattle stables. The project thus makes a contribution beyond the usual further development of conventional methods and provides a relevant building block for the barn of the future.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

DD of cattle is an important infectious hoof disease caused mainly by infections with bacteria
such as F. necrophorum or P. levii. Therapy for this disease usually consists of a combination of functional hoof care and administration of systemic or topical antibiotics and various chemicals. However, the systemic use of antibiotics results in temporary interruption of milk and meat production, whereas most chemicals lack environmental compatibility. As part of the EIP Agri funded project "PlaWaKiRi - The use of plasma water against claw infections in cattle", antimicrobial reduction studies tested the use of a TRIS buffered plasma activated water (Tb-PAW) as an alternative therapeutic approach. Thereby, a high antimicrobial effect of the Tb-PAW against different microorganisms relevant for DD could be shown even under the influence of different factors (storage time and storage temperature, organic material).
