Project Title

Spirulina in Northern Germany

Project description

The objective is to establish the production of the microalgae Spirulina in greenhouses at two farms. To achieve the goal, the cultivation technique for spirulina is to be optimized and an efficient harvesting method is to be developed. The OG consists of four members. Novagreen Projektmanagement GmbH is responsible for the project coordination and the implementation of the scientific-technical goals, i.e the optimization of the cultivation technique and the development of an efficient harvesting method. Agrinova Projektmanagement GmbH, which produces and processes organic certified Chlorella microalgae, is responsible for the implementation of the scientific-biological targets, i.e. cultivation experiments with different Spirulina strains are to be conducted and different concepts of nutrient supply will be tested in order to optimize an organic certified fertilizer, which is already used for the cultivation of Chlorella microalgae. Furthermore, two farmers, which already produce organic certified Chlorella, are part of the OG. There, the developed concept is to be put into practice.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The project could demonstrate that the cultivation and processing of Spirulina microalgae in Northern Germany is technically possible and economically feasible. Field testings of different harvesting techniques and the analysis of growth and morphology of Spirulina led to the development of a highly efficient belt-filter for harvesting algae. The project members also found feasible ways to control and increase growth of Spirulina. Technical improvements of the pond culturing process could be established, for example, novel aeration units to maximize the crop. For drying the wet algae and turning it into valuable greenware for further processing, a spaghetti extruder as well as a container drying system were developed. On July 27, 2020, the foundation of the German Algae Cooperative (Deutsche Algengenossenschaft, short DAG) laid basis for trading and marketing Spirulina and other locally grown algae products in the future. Spirulina cultivation opens new... (s. Abschlussbericht)
