Project Title

Breeding for undocked pigs and a reduced risk of tail injuries

Project description

Keeping undocked pigs poses a major challenge for farm. But intact tails are a step towards animal-friendly, socially acceptable porc production. Good robustness of healthy pigs makes it easier to avoid tail docking. in addition to husbandry, feeding and herd management, genetics have an impact on te health status of the pigs. Animal welfare is one of the highest relevance throughout the breeding stage. Therefore, animal welfare characteristics that can be edited by breeding should be identified and includet in the breeding programs of the rural herdbook breeds of the Baden-Württemberg Pig Breeding Association. The breeds German Landrace, Large White, Piétrain and Duroc as well as crosses from the parent breeds are included. Furthermore, an automated, digital survey of the new traits is being developed and tested, which is intended to form the basis for establishing an economic performance test.

Final report

Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The results allow an identification of appropriate health, robustness and behaviorial traits that can be edited by breeding. the first steps in an automated, digital survey of the new traits has been tested. A recommendation on a practical survey of animal welfare characteristics can be made. Based on this, the breeding goals of the German Landrace, Large Wehite, Piétrain and Duroc breeds will be reviewed and further developed. Breeding animals with special animal welfare characteristics, especially pigs with reduced risk of tail injuries in undocked herds, have a competetive advantage. The consideration of animal welfare in pig breeding contributes to an imprived health status of the piglets and fattening pigs and thus to more animal welfare. This leads to an improved acceptance of pig husbandry in society and a sustainable and resource-efficient pork production.
