Project Title

Regenerative crop production using no-till and intercropping in the dryland region of Rhinehesse

Project description

The overall goal of the project is to maintain productive crop production while making production more resilient to the consequence of climate change. This, combined with no-till of main crops and intercrop mixtures, represents a completely new innovative approach that has hardly been tried or implemented in Europe so far.

As a special feature, this approach is established under the dry-warm growing conditions of Rhinehessen.
Due to the drastically changing conditions for crop production, new approaches and adaptations of crop production systems are needed.

One approach is regenerative agriculture. This focuses on minimizing soil disturbance, providing year-round ground cover, promoting biodiversity and preserving root systems. The project uses a no-till machine with a cross-slot coulter that is able to place the intercrop seed under the straw of the previous crop with almost no soil movement, ensuring good emergence of the intercrop. The same machine is also used to till the main crop into the standing intercrop.
