Project Title

Microclimate sensors for individual fertilization - PreciseNitrogen

Project description

The project Precise Nitrogen investigates a novel sensor system for precise nitrogen application based on IoT-sensor networks and image analyses. It aims at optimizing resources use in nitrogen fertilization to enhance resource efficiency using the example of wheat cropping. With the help pf sensor data a better decision-making will be facilitaed. For this purpose, a cost-efficient in situ-sensor network for microclimate detection within the field will be established and specific recommendations for nitrogen application will be derived from this data. Along with that, it is seeked for establishung an open interface to synthesize sensor data, satellite images and management data within a farm-management-system.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

In conclusion, it can be said that the use of modern sensor technology can help to optimize site-specific nitrogen application. However, there are still many obstacles to overcome before the technologies presented can be implemented in agricultural practice. During the course of the project, it became apparent that the models used were not yet fully developed and needed further optimization, e.g. to react to extreme weather events. Nevertheless, the results achieved could reflect the potential of this technology, make experience measurable and give hope for further progress in the future. Apart from this, the project successfully established a link between science and practice and benefited from the experiences of both sides. It became clear that networking between science and practice must also be an integral part of subsequent projects in order to develop technologies that reflect agricultural reality. Ultimately further re-search is needed to validate and extend the results of th
