Project Title

Improving animal health and competitiveness on organic and conventionell farms through the use of 4.0 sensor technology

Project description

It is an increasing challenge for pig farmers to improve animal welfare, reduce antibiotic use, make production more transparent and meet society's animal husbandry requirements. Good animal health and an overall stress-reducing attitude are of particular importance. In the interdisciplinary Operational Group "SmartPigProduction" (SPP) farmers, experts, consultants, scientists and veterinarians are involved in order to implement 4.0 sensor technology on pig farms and to increase knowledge about pig keeping and animal health. By collaborating with conventional and organic operating farms, synergy effects are lifted in an interactive innovation model. On the basis of SmartData, predictive models for optimizing husbandry and animal health are being developed. This will enable farmers to react in real-time without delay to any reactions of the animals and developments in the stable.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

It is an increasing challenge for pig farmers to improve animal welfare, reduce antibiotic use,
make production more transparent and meet society's animal husbandry requirements. Good
animal health and an overall stress-reducing attitude are of particular importance.
In the interdisciplinary Operational Group "SmartPigProduction" (SPP) conventional and organic
operating farmers, experts, consultants, scientists and veterinarians were involved in order to
implement 4.0 sensor technology in pig barns and to increase knowledge about pig keeping and
animal health. The Multi-actor approach maximize the use of complementary knowledge, foster
active participation of all from beginning to end and focus on farmers‘ needs.
Data on temperature, humidity, luminosity, noise, NH3, and CO2 was collected in 24/7 mode.
Production data, use of antibiotics and information about the health status were...(see final report).
