Select4Milk
The project aims to optimise the nutritional situation for suckling pigs. In addition to an extended data acquisition regarding performance parameters of sows and piglets, the teats of lactating sows are photographed with a thermal imaging camera. These data are analysed and compared with the performance data. All data will be integrated into the sow planner and the selection criteria "milk yield and longevity" will be developed as a decision aid for the livestock farmer.
The Select4Milk project successfully collected thermographic images of the udder ridge, health data from clinical examination, and performance and production parameters in sow herds. Overall, it was shown that thermography of the teat line at the time of birth contains information that can help to identify sick animals whose illness has a negative impact on their piglets.
The Milk Score (MS) was developed as a novel score to evaluate the rearing performance of lactating sows. For this purpose, a linear regression model was developed to increase the practicality of the MS for use in practical farming. In the long term, the use of the Milk Score
can increase the longevity of the sows and the litter quality of the herd. The Milk Score as well as the other animal health traits newly included in the project can be used by farmers in the db Planner. Overall, it provides an animal welfare-based performance score that farmers can use... (see final report).
