Project Title

Innovative indoor greening systems in livestock farming to improve animal and environment protection

Project description

In Europe most farm animals are kept incloors, where excessive levels of dust, noxious gases, and noise can build up and affect the well-being of animals and humans. Despite many countermeasures and high standards of regulations, there is ample potential for improvement of the indoor climate. One key item will be the innovative development of indoor greening to reduce dust, noxious gases, and noise levels, leading to an improved indoor climate and a low-emission indoor husbandry. Suitable plants and technical greening systems will be selected, meeting specific criteria, e.g. simple assembly, automated irrigation, and low-effort maintenance. Successful marketing will depend on proven effects on indoor climate, cost-efficiency, and animal health and productivity. Additionally, the presence of the plants is also expected to lead to less aggressive and calmer behaviour of the animals and to have positive effects on the working atmosphere in livestock husbandry. The project will also increase the public acceptance of livestock husbandry and to lastingly improve the public perception of modern agriculture.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The aim of the project was to develop innovative barn greening systems for livestock farming and to implement a novel process to improve the barn climate in livestock facilities by approximating an environment adapted to nature. Individual greening systems were designed for the studied animal housing systems (pig, turkey) and installed in the designated animal barns. Measurement technology was integrated into the test environment to record pollutant gases and environmental parameters. In multiple experimental runs, it was found that selected green plants thrived under the environmental conditions and caused a significant increase in relative humidity. The evaluation of individual tests showed an increased in daily weight gain of piglets under test conditions. Individual series of measurements also showed a reduction in the measured ammonia content in the exhaust air. However, these effects could not be confirmed as significant overall.
