Cultivation und quality improvement of mint species with special flavour and ingredients in Hesse

Project description

Traditionally, Germany is among the most important locations for producing and processing medicinal and spice plants in Europe. Especially medium-sized manufactures which produce spices, aromas, food supplements, and herbal medicines hold a leading position at the international level. The Operational Group (OG) Aromatic Mint focuses on the innovative potential of their project on mint varieties with high menthol content and special aromas. Objectives are increasing the competitiveness of agricultural enterprises, introducing new and marketable products with improved qualities providing regionally produced, high-value plants for processing and ensuring a sustainable and environmentally responsible production of useful plants. Finally, the OG develops recommendations concerning cultivation practices suitable for the needs of the selected mint varieties.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

For the evaluation of an extensive assortment of mint species or varieties with the aim of evaluation, selection and cultivation of suitable mints in Hesse, a screening with a total of 106 mint accessions was carried out in which different characteristics of the plants were investigated. Of the mint accessions screened, nine accessions were recommended for vegetative propagation and given to the practice partner. Together with a tea and a phytopharmaceutical producer, the partner is now testing the further usability of the plants. The results of the project can contribute to better competitiveness and diversification of agriculture as well as to the promotion of biodiversity, regionality and sustainability. This is justified by the low cultivation prevalence and agronomic characteristics of mint, as well as the demand for mint products. However, the fulfillment of these objectives requires that the products of the project can be successfully placed and established on the market.
