Project Title

Development of an innovative, non-invasive measurement method for determining the potential yield of hedge banks and short-rotation forestry (SRF) in

Project description

The OG biomass is aiming to strengthen the agriculture and on the other hand to optimize the use of biomass. Thus a positive and lasting contribution to improving the climate, the protection of resources and the environment is made. The goal of the project is to optimize hedge banks as protection for agricultural land. SRF should also be included in the observation, in order to enable a direct comparison (e.g. regarding biodiversity) between natural, habitat-linked and agriculturally-utilized agroforestry systems. The innovation project is developing and validating a regionally and/or locally adjusted, yield-measuring based management system for the planting, cultivation and harvesting of economically and ecologically valuable hedge banks and SRF, i.e. sustainable agroforestry systems. The management system should also be modified to meet the needs of small and medium-sized conventional or ecological agricultural businesses which use the biomass produced to generate energy for their own use.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The analysed bends showed a dry mass yield of 20 to 4470 (Ø 810) kg per 10 m bend length including overstorey, which were not weighed directly but estimated via their size. A prediction model was generated from the volumes of the 3D model and the corresponding weighed wood masses. This states that, on average, a cubic metre of bend has 1.2 kg of dry wood mass - with a variation of 59 %. This "error" (variation) represents the deviations from the predicted to the weighed timber yields and is expressed via the rRMSE (relative Root Mean Square Error). The composition of the wood species, sky orientation, maintenance and soil properties had no influence on the wood yield or calorific value.
