Project Title

Transformations in viticulture in Baden-Württemberg: climate change, digitalisation and sustainability (KliDiNa)

Project description

Climate change and the increasing scarcity of resources pose major challenges for the economy, research and society. Industries that, like viticulture, are directly dependent on nature and the climate must act quickly and innovatively. The FairChoice label for controlled sustainable wine was developed at Heilbronn University in 2010. The scientifically based catalogue of criteria includes criteria from all three sustainability areas. As part of the KliDiNa project, the sustainability criteria are being adapted for digitalisation and harmonised with other standards such as the German Sustainability Code. The aim is to develop a low-threshold sustainability management system for winegrowing enterprises. In addition to a freely accessible self-assessment and advisory tool, another software level is being created for the certification process with FairChoice. In a market research approach, communication strategies will be developed to strengthen sustainability awareness and branding. These will be targeted internally to the industry as well as to end consumers.

Final report

Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The aim is to develop a digital sustainability management system that is intuitive and easy to use for winegrowing enterprises. A freely accessible level of the software will transparently present the FairChoice criteria and enable farms to carry out a non-binding self-assessment. In an integrated consulting tool, users will receive optimisation suggestions (coordination with EIP "Sustainable Viticulture"). At a further level, users who decide to apply for certification will be able to feed their data into the certification process. The entire certification process up to the awarding of the seal will be digitalised. In addition, data on the marketing of sustainable wine in Germany will be collected and analysed as part of an extensive market research study, which will then be processed and fed back into practice as recommendations for action.
