Project Title

Development of an animal-friendly method for taking blood from horses using a tube centrifuge (One Step II)

Project description

Based on the results of the preliminary project, objective is the implementation of an animal-friendly device for plamapheresis, which is adapted to the physiological requirements of the horse and can be carried out in a one-step process. Such a device, which allows a horse to donate plasma without decoupled return of the corpuscular components, without lengthy downtimes and with complete preservation of all blood components, is not available. The aim is therefore to establish a corresponding animal-friendly process that allows plasmapheresis without decoupling the return of components and can be used for various applications by the applicant and in veterinary medicine.

Final report

Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

Plasmapheresis is a procedure used to obtain blood plasma. In the pre-project, it was possible to provide an apparatus technology that largely meets the time and volume requirements. However, it was not possible to keep all blood components vital, so that the aim of an one-step system was not achieved. Finding a solution that is suitable for routine use is focused in the planned project. Methodical approach are computer simulations that lead to constructive solutions. The consideration of the highest possible standard of animal welfare will consistently characterize the planned project.
