new technology for plant propagation of broad leaf trees in vitro (DENDROTEC I)
In-vitro propagation is used in the production of fast-growing rootstocks for fruit trees and other broad-leaved trees (e.g. wild cherry as a supplier of lumber). However, this technology is very labour-intensive and therefore cost-intensive. Within the project the production steps in the process were evaluated in order to find optimization potential. The aim of the project was to increase the rate of reproduction, to improve the development process of the cuttings and to reduce the amount of manual work. In addition new propagation cultures of interesting deciduous trees were selected for regional forest plant breeding.
Investigations were carried out in the following fields: ● Usage of novel single plant trays for rooting of the cuttings as an interface to horticultural growing ● Improvement and control of the growth conditions during the transfer and further cultivation of the rootstocks ● Implementation of an elongation step to increase the quality of the cuttings for rooting ● Selection and establishment of 23 aspen and 23 wild cherry clones ● Checking the integration of complete liquid cultures (problem of endophytes)
The project results were successful: The process of propagation and plant production in deciduous trees was fundamentally changed and it was shown that new developments on the market (substrate trays) could be effectively integrated into the technology.
In a follow-up project (DENDROTEC II) the storage of the cuttings is to be improved by induction of dormancy.
