Project Title

Schneckenzucht Altmark - Snail breeding establishment, breeding condition optimization and value chain development for complete utilization of snails

Project description

Snail farming has the potential to provide nutritious meat as well as food and non-food biopolymers. Currently, none of the German breeders extract slime from snails, yet it contains valuable ingredients. Instead, snail slime is expensively imported from countries where husbandry conditions and harvesting methods do not meet German animal husbandry standards. The meat of Roman snails offers many advantages. It has better nutritional values than other meat and also offers ecological benefits. Nevertheless, people in Germany shy away from eating the snails. Until now, it has also been common practice to market the animals with their snail shells, which means that the valuable components of the shells cannot be used appropriately.
Target products are snail meat as food as well as valuable biopolymers from slime and snail shells, e.g. for the cosmetics industry or water treatment technology. The snail shells are to be marketed separately, in contrast to previous practice, in order to exploit the potential of the biopolymer they contain. Snail breeding is to take place under controlled, sustainable animal husbandry conditions.
