Project Title

MAJA - anti-mite dosage kit for bees

Project description

Mites of Varroa are the main reason for bee deaths in winter. In Germany nearly every Bee colony is infected by mites of varroa. Without control measures, damages occur within a very short time and the bee colonies die after two to three years. The measures to combat mite infestation currently require a combination of several methods, although there is still no safe and easy-to-use agent. The EIP project MAJA aims to develop a new type of metering device for formic acid in beehives targeted application of the acid leads to effective control of the varroa mite infestation. As a result, a sensory guided and controllable evaporation device is to be created to enable precise and needs-based regulation and ventilation for treatment in different concentrations in beehives. The device is to be tested and modeled on bee colonies in order to later enable broad use in the EU.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The EIP project MAJA aims to develop a novel dosing device for formic acid in beehives. The targeted application of the acid leads to effective control of infestation by Varroa mites. As a result of the MAJA project, a sensor-guided and controllable evaporation device was implemented to enable precise and needs-based regulation and ventilation in beehives to treat different concentrations of formic acid depending on the mite infestation in the beehive. For this purpose, the novel device was tested and modeled on numerous bee colonies as part of prototype tests and a comparative test in order to adequately demonstrate how it works. The new MAJA solution reaches the vaccination of every bee in the hive. The mites are killed and the bees are strengthened for the spring. The MAJA anti-mite dosing KIT is suitable for every type of beehive. The tests on the bees have shown that the solution works very well, faster and more effectively than other methods. A self-...
