Project Title

Optimizing the ecological livestock farming of pigs and sows in Brandenburg by innovation in management and feeding

Project description

Content of the project is how to increase the attractiveness and profitability of organic pig / sow management through further development of related farming concepts in association with the introduction of scientific and technological innovations in the area of livestock farming and feeding as well as the enhancement of the networks. The project refers to the following practical problems: optimal nutrition when feeding with proprietorial food, especially in the supply of vegetable protein; lack of husbandry systems that suits both the economic conditions as well as the requirements applicable to organic pig farming; lack of networking of pig farmers in everyday operation (exchange of new knowledge, experiences) to improve the management. As project aim, i.e. the  creation of a business plan for ecological pig livestock farming in Brandenburg and establishment of a network for targeted and short time exchange of information and intelligence with regard to the matters of ecological livestock farming of pigs, is defined.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

Feeding concepts for Brandenburg with regionally produced fodder were developed and tested in feeding trials. The trials showed that it makes sense to use the farm's own feed to reduce the cost of concentrated feed. The greatest challenge, however, lies in the adequate supply of amino acids. Especially for piglets and lactating sows, there is a need for supplementary feed. Overall, economic advantages in pig and sow husbandry were achieved with site-adapted feeding recommendations. In addition, the current developments of husbandry systems in organic pig farming in Germany were analyzed. Subsequently, plans were realized from sow management to fattening in the sub-areas farrowing pen, holding pen, piglet rearing and pig fattening. The implementation of the plans took place at the practice partner as a conversion solution of existing old buildings. The modernization proved to be a cost-effective and economic solution compared to the new construction.
