Project Title

Sustainable extension of crop rotation by summer cereals in water-sensitive areas using the example of old cereal varieties for the baking and brewing

Project description

Farmers with fields in water-sensitive areas in the Niederrhein region are increasingly looking for alternatives concerning crop rotation. For this purpose, the cultivation of old varieties of summer grain could be a solution. Thus far, there is hardly any experience with these varieties in the Niederrhein region. The project aims at recommending economically promising old varieties of summer grain for baking and brewing, especially in water protection areas. In order to identify those varieties most suited for baking and brewing, the project partners examine different varieties according to their suitability for baking, malting and brewing as well as their nutritional qualities. Additionally, the varieties should offer a high marketing potential for the farmers in order to sell them to bakers and brewers.
