Project Title

Swine inflammation and necrosis syndrome (SINS) in Saxon pig farms - occurrence, effects and influencing factors (SINS-Saxony)

Project description

Saxon pig farms are to be supported and accompanied in the establishment of an "action plan for the renunciation of tail-docking" in practice. The project will focus on the following questions:
1. how high is the prevalence of SINS-associated changes in body regions of suckling piglets, which operational influencing factors exist and what does the diagnosis mean for the animals´ further life?
2. can the detection of SINS in suckling piglets be (partially) automated and objectified by imaging technology?
3. what influence does the feed composition for sows as well as for piglets during weaning and fattening have on the occurrence of SINS?

Results focusing on practiceorientation

1. less than 10% of the animals were completely symptom-free. More than 90% of piglets showed inflammatory changes in at least one part of the body. Significant differences between farms. Suckling piglets without changes in the ear differed significantly from those with changes until rearing. For the tail parameter, significant differences exist even up to the fattening or gilts stage.

2. the results showed that the imaging technique is currently not suitable to present with high accuracy an objective quantification of the changes due to the inflammation and necrosis syndrome.

3. Statement on correlations between feed parameters and SINS total score were subject to strong reciprocal effects and interactions as well as antagonisms due to shifting of parameters of farm-specific feeds. Sources of error were e.g. in the supply of amino acids, especially lysine.
