Project Title

Improving nitrogen efficiency using the Albrecht method and precise soil analyses using satellite-based data

Project description

The optimisation of nitrogen efficiency in agricultural crops is one of the most important prerequisites for counteracting nitrogen losses and  harmful environmental effects. In order to achieve improved nitrogen efficiency in the plants, a precise method of fertilisation is required above all. In this project we will fertilize according to the so-called Albrecht method. This method does not focus on the cultivated crop but on the soil and the nutrients it contains. It is a holistic fertilization considering all nutrients and their effects and interactions to each other. In Addition to nitrogen all other macro- and micronutrients that play a role will be considered. The Project shall addressed following questions:

  • Which fertilisation methods improve nitrogen efficiency?
  • What influence does fertilisation according to the Albrecht method have on N efficiency compared to fertilisation after plant removal?
  • Which nutrients and nutrient ratios have the greatest influence on nitrogen efficiency in the plant?
  • Does part plot fertilisation have an economic influence? etc.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

In this project, various nitrogen fertilisation systems in winter wheat were investigated to improve nitrogen efficiency. To this end, plot trials were carried out in different yield zones in 2020, 2021 and 2022. The results show that site-specific nitrogen fertilisation helps to improve N efficiency, reduce the N balance and achieve precise fertiliser application in relation to the plants' nitrogen requirements. At the same time, the results show that taking the Albrecht/Kinsey fertiliser recommendation into account can actually make a further contribution to improving nitrogen efficiency. For example, with the same nitrogen fertilisation, N efficiency was improved by around 9 % on average over the three trial years and an average additional yield of around 6 dt/ha was generated. Overall, the innovativ approach is very easy to integrate into the operational process so that practitioners can use the findings at any time.
