Project Title

Selection, testing and propagation of ungrafted and climate adapted street and avenue tree assortments for nursery production (Trees4Streets)

Project description

Aim of the project is the establishment of a new, innovative, pioneering farming system in the nursery practice for the production of street and avenue trees. The project uses physiological early tests to select adaptable varieties of various tree species and provide for nursery production. The new production and cultivation system is carried out based on the in vitro propagation of this new climate adapted varieties. An effective transfer process of in vitro plants will be developed in the street and avenue tree production, which is based on providing ungrafted varieties for outdoor cultivation in nurseries.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

Woody plants produced for urban areas are insufficiently adapted to future weather extremes. Three tree nurseries, two research institutions and municipalities worked together within the framework of an operational group for the production of new climate-adapted tree assortments for the Berlin-Brandenburg region. The aim was to develop own-root trees and a more stress-tolerant assortment of street trees. For this purpose, the methodological basis for screening and certification procedures for the climate change-adapted woody plants was developed. The potentially drought-tolerant, rootless woody plants were planted in demonstration plantings in the nursery and in municipalities for information, marketing and monitoring purposes. With the newly developed rapid in vitro test procedure (stress tests and biomarker patterns based on own-root clones), the selection and thus the production period can be shortened by at least 2 years, resulting in reducing costs.
