Animal welfare Dairy cattle Hesse- Provision and further development of a practical animal welfare tool for dairy farms
The EU is striving to improve animal welfare standards. Since 2014, livestock farms have been obliged to carry out their own operational inspections using suitable animal welfare indicators, although the procedure and documentation have not been further specified. The "Animal Welfare Tool for Dairy Cattle" has already been developed to make this task easier. This Excel application is to be tested on 40 dairy farms in Hesse in order to record and evaluate the animal welfare situation on the farms. In addition, the tool is to be tested for its practical suitability and developed into a freely available advisory tool. This will enable standardised monitoring of animal welfare indicators. With the help of the application, important animal welfare indicators can be recorded quickly and easily during a tour of the herd. In combination with information on the husbandry environment and the results of the milk yield test, the animal welfare situation of the dairy herd can be comprehensively assessed and documented.
