Project Title

Inhibition of biological nitrification for the protection of groundwater after lucerne upheaval

Project description

The project aimed to examine whether ribwort, mixed with lucerne or catch-cropped following wheat, could reduce nitrate leaching due to an inhibition of nitrification in soil.

In field trials on a deep soil in Saxony, mixtures of lucerne and ribwort as well as those of lucerne and meadow fescue were established. Additionally, the impact of weather conditions and N-availability to subsequent crops was assessed.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

A mixture of lucerne with ribwort, especially with a relative seed percentage of 67% and 33% of the pure seed rate, increases the yield formation of the mixture and the field crops compared to a corresponding mixture of lucerne and meadow fescue. At the same time, ribwort, more than meadow fescue, reduces nitrate emissions after plowing. Due to its high competitive power, ribwort should only be sown at a seed rate of approx. 0.75 to 1.50 kg/ha in mixtures with lucerne, depending on the thousand-grain mass of the ribwort seed. The sowing depth should not exceed 1.5 cm, even on sandy soil.
